Materials Revolution and Computational Gemology

We have entered a new era of atomic scale materials design, an age of unprecedented acceleration in discovery of innovative materials. The potentials of density functional theory in atomic scale materials design, followed by an introduction to the new field of computational gemology.

HT+P / HPHT treatment of sapphire

The application of pressure is a new addition to the toolkit of heat treatments for sapphire. In this talk, Mubashir provides a deep scientific background of the subject and why pressure accelerates the treatments, heals fissures and enhances colors. HPHT sapphires will only get more and more common in the marketplace, hence, the importance of this research.

Lanthanum borates as a flux in corundum treatment

Fluxing agents are essential in heat treatments of sapphire and ruby gemstones that contain fissures or fractures. Here, we describe a novel fluxing agent that can outperform the age-old borax based formulations. The formulation is environmentally friendly, clean and optically compatible with corundum!

Theory behind the cause of gray shade in sintered Al2O3

Sintering of all alpha-alumina based ceramics under reductive atmospheres and graphite dies generally leaves behind a grayish shade, the root cause of which is not fully understood. Some say it's carbon, some say impurities. Here, we describe how precipitation of nano-iron is the ultimate cause!

Revisiting the cause of brown color in as-grown CVD diamond

The cause of brown coloration in as-grown CVD diamond is subject to debate and two main theories exist: vacancy clusters, and nitrogen related defects. We show that nitrogen-hydrogen related centers are the ultimate cause of the brown coloration. Read our latest publication on this topic for the comprehensive research that was published 4 years after this talk.

Defects in Sulphur & Fluorine Co-doped Diamond

Defects in diamond have fascinated researchers for the longest time, for great reasons. A problem remains regarding n-type conductivity, which has proven challenging in diamond. Here we describe how sulphur and fluorine co-doping seems like a solution, however, the computational results show otherwise.

Modelling & construction of an economical lab scale graphite furnace

We adore high temperature processes, and this means we do our best to achieve sustainable economical pathways to ultra-high temperatures. Here, we demonstrate our modeling and construction of an economical lab-scale graphite furnace that can achieve temperatures over 2000 Celsius, designed for sintering of borides, carbides and nitrides.

Casting simulation with Altair Inspire Cast software

Casting without the proper modeling of the process can lead into a plethora of defects. Here, Maryam shows how to use the Altair Inspire Cast software for designing the perfect casting procedure and optimizing the cast piece computationally, prior to experimental mould design.
